Founded by Producer Chris Bongirne in 1989, Smokestack Films takes its name from the coal rich area of Pennsylvania where Chris grew up. Chris has always likened the process of filmmaking to the forges and factories of his youth; places where entire communities came together to meld their talent, commitment and work ethic to mix raw materials into a source of shared pride and service to others.
People look to narrative to better understand and maneuver the world, just as a film crew comes together to best express a given story for that waiting audience. From our slate and business history, we hope that our main motivations stand out. While the film and TV business are indeed about "business", Smokestack seeks projects and partnerships that create bold and inspiring takes on our world.
Smokestack has had the good fortune and privilege to work with some of the industry's brightest and best, including Ken and Ric Burns, Brad Krevoy, Jeff Klein, Garry Bassin, Marc Bikindou, Aventine Hill Films and so many more. We don't just seek our own projects either and are always ready to collaborate on your stories or build a team to help implement them.
Smokestack is proud announce the acquisition of rights to Barry Unsworth's award-winning book. The project is now in active development for TV.
Quincey Troupe's riveting biography of the trailblazing Miles Davis is now in pre-production as a major feature film.
